MIGS - Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery is the rage in ophthalmology. Glaucoma is a fairly common and painless disease that is usually associated with high pressure in the eye that slowly causes permanent loss of vision. The nerve damage can be halted, or slowed down, by using medication eyedrops, lasers, or even surgery which all work by lowering the pressure in the eye. Typical glaucoma surgery has always been associated with serious side effects and complications.

The iStent Procedure for Glaucoma Treatment

The iStent is one of the newest, simplest, and most effective ways of lowering the eye pressure in a minimally invasive manner thereby reducing complications. It's the smallest implantable device in medicine! When patients with both cataract and glaucoma are having surgery, I will often recommend combining both the cataract surgery with the iStent so that we can attempt to lower the pressure at the same time as improving the vision from the cataract surgery. It adds only a few minutes to the already short procedure, and it gives us a great chance to lower the eye pressure thereby possibly stopping 1 or even 2 medication drops.
